Home crowd inspires Carl to match his season's best

MOTORSPORT racer Carl Shield equalled his best finish to date when he took to the track at Croft Circuit at the weekend for rounds 9, 10 and 11 of the Michelin Ginetta GT4 Supercup.

“It was a fairly good result, but I was hoping to do better in front of a home crowd,” said the Middleton-in-Teesdale-based racer.

“But it wasn’t for a lack of trying.”

Mr Shield, who only began competing in the race series this year, said he didn’t get a good qualifying session in after getting stuck behind a straggler on his fast lap.

However, he managed to battle his way up the field in round 9, finishing in sixth position.

In round 10 he started well and was cutting his way through the field when a rival took a lunge at his car and nudged him off the track backwards.

In round 11 he managed to finish in fifth position, but was elevated to fourth when another racer received a penalty.

“I’m not where I want to be. But it’s all a learning curve and unlike other teams I’m not putting the testing in between races so we’re figuring out the right set up for the car at the race meetings,” he added.

“It was a fantastic weekend though and great to hear people cheering me on.”

The weekend’s results means Mr Shield moves up to fifth in the championship standings and will be back out on the track at the end of July at Snetterton in Norfolk.
