Barnard Castle Rugby Club’s bid to get every child playing sport

Barnard Castle Rugby Club wants to make the sport available to all schoolchildren in Teesdale.

And that’s why they are raising funds to enable pupils to play.

Many schools don’t have the spare money available to finance coaching sessions within term time.

But Barney’s director of coaching, Paul Davis, has been going into schools to provide coaching sessions that have many benefits for the students.

A club spokesman said: “Barnard Castle RUFC is a community rugby club committed to improving the health, wellbeing, fitness, confidence and social development of young people across our local area.

“We are seeking funding support to deliver a two-year project for a free, year-round rugby coaching programme for local primary and secondary schools and arrange competitive tournaments between the schools.

“Our aim is to remove financial barriers that prevent children from accessing regular physical activity and structured sport opportunities, while helping schools enhance their PE provision and support pupil wellbeing.”

Several Teesdale businesses and trusts have made donations, including Technimark and the Marwood Trust, and the rugby club hope firms and individuals will be prepared to support the venture.

Paul said: “I have started a crowdfunding project for which I am aiming to raise £800.

“I would love it if people can make a contribution and any amount, large or small, will be hugely appreciated.

“The coaching I have done has had a fantastic reaction from the children, they absolutely love it.

“It gets them outside, in the fresh air where they get lots of exercise and have a great time.”
