Athletes line up for annual Raby Runs

Alex Jardine makes her way along the picturesque course at Raby Castle

HUNDREDS of runners from across the region descended on Staindrop for the annual Raby Runs.
Organised by Teesdale Athletics Club and held in the grounds of Raby Castle, three races were organised this year – a 10k, 5k and 2.5k fun run for the youngest athletes.
In the 10k race, which attracted a field of 227, Sunderland Harriers and AC runner Steve Rankin was first home in a time of 35.07mins, outpacing Elvet Striders’ Bryan Potts, who came home in 35.38.
Charlotte Dillon, running for Houghton Harriers and AC was the first female – and fourth overall – crossing the line in 36.47.
Locally, Evenwood Road Runners fielded a team of four in the 10k and first back for the club was Scott Parker in 45.15, which earned him sixth place in the men’s senior category. Keith Hilton finished in 47.28 and third place in the men’s veterans 60s and over.
Lauren Shaw came sixth in the women’s seniors in 51.56 and Julie Tinkler came second in the veteran female 50s in 54.31.
In the 5k race, the honours went to Tees Valley-based TS Harrier junior Dawit Asmelash, who raced home in 17.33, ahead of Durham City Harriers’ William Jardine.
Elswick Harriers’ Catherine Lowes was the first female home in 22.02.
In the 2.5k fun run, the first three home were Henry Engelhart, Phys Price and Zak Worthington.
