NYSD Women’s Hardball 100 final Norton v Barnard Castle

Barney were worthy winners of the Women’s Hardball 100, beating Norton in the final at Acklam Park, Middlesbrough.

Norton won the toss and asked their opponents to bat, a decision they would come to regret.

Openers Lucy Hetherington (26) and player of the match Annabelle Tiplady (41) got Barney off to a flying start, putting on 68 for the first wicket.

Norton hit back to reduce Barney from 68-0 to 81-5, but Clara Tudor (20 not out off 11 balls) and Emily Greves (11no) added 31 vital runs at the death.

Norton batted out their 100 balls but none of their batters managed to score at more than a run-a-ball and they could only reach 72-7 with Bea Dolby top scoring with 26.

Greves finished with 2-10 while Hetherington (1-10) and Tudor (1-23) were also among the wickets, but a major factor was sharp fielding that accounted for three run-outs.

Delighted coach Mark Robson said: “Having been beaten in the final last year, it was really satisfying to go one stage further this season.

“The girls played well all season and have become very tight as a group.

“We’ll enjoy celebrating this one and then start making plans for next year.

“It is great that there are so many new women’s and girls’ teams throughout the area – and the standard just keeps improving.”

Pallister Cup (U17), semi-final Barnard Castle v Norton

The Pallister Cup is contested by the four winners of the regional NYSD league winners and was this year hosted by Barnard Castle CC.

Barney won through to the final thanks to a strong batting display that featured half centuries from Will Poole (53 off 34 balls) and Toby Gent (50 off 30 balls).

Joe Rutherford’s 31 not out off 17 balls was also crucial as Barney finished on 188-3 off 20 overs.

The Pooles shone with the ball thanks to Beth’s 3-13 and Will’s 2-33 as Norton struggled to 123-9.

Pallister Cup (U17), final Barnard Castle v Marton

It was Marton’s turn to bat first and put the opposition under pressure.

Opener Alfie Hodgkinson scored 44 off 27 balls while No3 Henry Baldam hit 55 off 31 balls to give Marton a solid foundation.

Barney’s bowlers put the brakes on the run rate with Beth Poole taking 2-22 but 167-5 was a highly competitive score.

Barney struggled to get above the required rate, though Toby Gent hit 22 off 15 balls and Jack Bailey scored 40 off 28 before being run out.

Barney were bowled out for 125 in the 19th over but the defeat shouldn’t take the shine off what’s been an outstanding season.

They were presented with the salver for winning the Junior Division (West) on the day.

NYSD Premier Division Hartlepool v Barnard Castle

Barnard Castle have taken the title race to the final round of fixtures after beating Hartlepool by four wickets.

But leaders Richmondshire require just five more points to win the league after they thumped relegated Marske by nine wickets.

Hartlepool won the toss and elected to bat at Park Drive and made a solid start, reaching 76-0 before Karl Carver trapped Yash Vagadia leg before wicket four runs shy of his half century.

From that point on, Barney chipped away at the Pool batsmen with Suminda Lakshan taking 6-26 and Finn Usher claiming 3-14 as Hartlepool were bowled out for 142 in the 34th over.

Barney lost Usher for four in the second over but his opening partner James Clarkson hung around to compile a patient 55 not out.

Among his batting partners Lakshan scored 19 off 18 balls while Ed Barnes’ 19 came off 36. Richard Borrowdale scored a run-a-ball 14, sealing victory with a six off Finlay Barlow (4-36).

Barney finish their Premier Division campaign with a home fixture against Darlington while Richmond travel to Bishop Auckland.
