A BUSINESSMAN has been left heartbroken after £3,000-worth of his beloved pigeons were stolen.
Brian Mustafa, who runs the hand car wash on Stainton Grove Industrial Estate, came back to work on Thursday, April 12, to find 30 of his prize birds had been taken.
The 30-year-old had spent two years amassing his collection of valuable breeds from Pakistan and Iran – tending to them at the rear of his business.
Bad weather kept him and his staff away from Monday, April 9, to Wednesday, April 11, when it is thought the thief or thieves struck.
“I do not understand who would pinch them – they [the birds] make me happy,” said Mr Mustafa.
“I have had the car wash for nearly three years and nobody has fought with me or fallen out with me. I don’t know who would do something like this.”
It is believed the culprits climbed a gate and then broke into Mr Mustafa’s loft to take the birds.
The gate to the cree was left hanging open and boxes were left strewn over the floor.
The father-of-three, who lives in Bishop Auckland, hoped whoever took the birds would own up and return them.
Mr Mustafa added: “They are my babies. I nearly had a heart attack because I’ve had these pigeons for more than two years.
“They were worth nearly £3,000.
“Maybe it’s a friend of mine – I don’t know and I don’t understand it.”
About 20 of his collection of fantails, tipplers and Iranian Highflying Tumblers were left untouched by the raid.
The breeds are known for their endurance and ability to fly at high altitudes.
A police investigation has been launched in the wake of the thefts.
