A PRIMARY school has been presented with an award for its eco-work by the UK’s largest conservation charity.
The Woodland Trust has given Green Lane Primary School, in Barnard Castle, a Green Tree Gold award for its efforts to recycle, plant trees and learn how to protect the environment.
During a special assembly last week, when members of school’s eco-club explained more about the Woodland Trust, headteacher Rob Goffee revealed the accolade.
The award scheme encourages pupils to be more environmentally friendly and promotes outdoor activities such as tree planting and recycling. Mr Goffee said: “The fact we are thinking about the environment and how we can make a difference to the world in the small things that we do is great.”
The children held a woodland day last term. One of the initiatives the eco-club has put forward is a pen recycling point, where all used biros, whiteboard markers and felt tip pens are collected, then sent off to a charity which melts down the plastic and turns it into useful items such as buckets, spades and garden benches.
