TWO dale Scouts who have been chosen to attend the world jamboree in South Korea next year are celebrating more success.
George Anderson and Blake Milroy, members of Tees-
dale Explorer Scouts, have achieved their bronze Duke of Edinburgh award and received a Chief Scout’s platinum award.
George and Blake are part of the district unit based at Staindrop Scout HQ.
Both have been involved with the movement from a young age, with Blake attending Staindrop Scouts and George a member of the Butterknowle Sea Scouts.
For their Duke of Edinburgh awards, they had to complete a number of different activities, including an expedition when they had to remain fully self sufficient.
They planned their route, menu and made sure they had all the correct equipment with them. They also completed volunteering tasks.
George helped out as a young leader at Butterknowle Beaver Scout Colony undergoing training for the role.
Blake worked at The Bowes Museum as a young curator.
For their physical section, George took the plunge as he is a keen swimmer and a member of his local club. Blake, a keen cricketer, underwent fitness training in the gym in Barnard Castle.
For their skills test, both completed map reading and navigation – which helped them complete their expedition. For the Chief Scout’s award, they had to complete a further two sections from
the international, community and values list.
They are now working towards their Queen’s Scout award, which they hope to complete within the next two-three years.
Andy Carr, Durham’s assistant county commissioner for Explorer Scouts, said: “The district is very proud of these two young adults.
“They are a good example to younger members of the movement and they are learning fantastic skills for life.
“Both of them are planning to move onto the next stage of the Duke of Edinburgh scheme to complete their silver award along with their Chief Scout’s diamond award.”
