A HEAVY rain shower didn’t dampen the spirits of contestants for this year’s fancy dress competition at Newsham Village Carnival on Saturday.
Organisers had their eyes on the clouds and just as the competition was set to get underway, the heavens opened.
However, judges carried out their work in the village hall, with contestants parading in front of the amassed crowd.
Judges were impressed with the variety and quality of the outfits and awarded the top Showman’s cup to Billy Marwood, who did a great impersonation of rock singer Freddie Mercury.
One of the judges, Sandra Swiergon, said: “I think it is so nice that this small community still makes the effort.”
The storm clouds soon passed however and although organisers did consider postponing the sports until July, they were able to go ahead on the village green.
