Barnard Castle bid to bounce back in cup clash

Durham Trophy, round one: Willington 4 Barnard Castle 0

After being knocked out of one cup competition at the weekend, Barnard Castle aim to bounce back with victory in another cup clash tomorrow.

Barney travel to the Ford Quarry Complex, near Sunderland, for a first round Monkwearmouth Cup tie against Durham FC Corinthians (Saturday, 2.30pm).

Manager John Close will be looking to get back to winning ways after watching his side lose to Willington for the second time this season last Saturday.

Barney started their 2026/27 Wearside League campaign with a home fixture against the Weardale side, who won 2-0 at the Tens Field on a disappointing night for the hosts.

Close was hoping for a better result and performance when the sides met in the first round of the Durham Trophy, but Willington ran out 4-0 winners with goals from Charlie Berry (2) and Johnson Ballan (2).

North Riding Football League Division One Richmond Town Reserves 7 Barnard Castle Reserves 1

Barney Reserves found early-season pacesetters Richmond Town Reserves too hot to handle in their latest Division One fixture.

Town stretched their 100 per cent record to seven fixtures after beating Barney 7-1.

The visitors were already trailing 3-0 to goals from Max Lawson, Danny Weatherill and Harry Saunders before Nouradine Mahamat scored for Barney on 17 minutes.

But a second for Weatherill and Jamie Ornsby’s strike made it 5-1 at half-time and that’s how it remained for most of the second period. However, in the closing stages Saunders scored twice to complete his hat-trick.

Barney will travel to Brandon Community Youth tomorrow to play a Durham County FA Minor Cup first round tie.
