Poignant finale for Doug Anderson’s funeral

A packed Brignall Church bore witness on Friday, October 2, to the funeral of well-known local farmer Doug Anderson.

Family, friends, and members of the local community gathered to remember Doug and celebrate his life.

The service was conducted by the Reverend John McHale, the local vicar.

Doug’s nephew, Gordon Cross, delivered the eulogy, which included plenty of anecdotes that brought smiles, and memories of Doug.

One story recalled how, on another occasion when Doug was delivering a eulogy, the sheet of paper he was reading from caught fire from the nearby candle.

His notes going up in flames.

There was also a poignant connection to Doug’s farming legacy.

Gordon has now taken over the baton of making Cotherstone Cheese, continuing a tradition which Doug was so closely associated with.

Doug’s friend George also paid tribute with a poem and personal memories, reflecting the affection and respect in which Doug was held by those who knew him.

At the graveside for the committal, where he was buried with his late wife Hazel, the rain finally stopped.

As family and friends gathered, a vibrant rainbow appeared, stretching dramatically across the Teesdale landscape.

It was a striking and fitting farewell to Doug, a hardy farmer who had spent his life working outdoors, whatever the weather.

Nature itself seemed to offer a last tribute as Doug was laid to rest, beneath the Teesdale skies he knew so well.
