Fundraiser brings fizz to annual village sports day get-together

FUNDS HELP: Daughter Rebecca Tiplady has been lending a fundraising hand to mother Valerie to ensure annual village sports day continues

BRINGING a range of independent traders under one roof for an evening of fizz and nibbles sounds like a recipe for success.

And that’s exactly what it has been for one dale woman, who runs the annual event to raise funds for a village sports day. The latest Fizz and Nibbles in Barnard Castle included everything from art, meat and plants to homemade desserts, crocheted teddy bears and handcrafted Yorkshire tweed accessories

The event, organised by Rebecca Tiplady, from Boldron, has gained a big following from craftspeople and visitors.

Each year Ms Tiplady, who has her own events company, takes time out of her busy schedule to organise an evening with the aim of raising enough money to fund the insurance for Boldron’s sports day. The sports day, which is held each July, has been organised by her mother, Valerie, for the past four decades.

However, even though it only has a few races, the cost of insurance for the has rocketed over the past few years.

She said: “The cost of the insurance is £350 and if mum had to organise coffee mornings to raise enough money to keep it going I don’t think we’d have enough days.”

Ms Tiplady, who was born and bred in Boldron, added: “I missed last year due to being pregnant, but I’ve run the event four times.

“We originally started at Boldron Village Hall then moved to Startforth Community Centre and this year we’ve had so much interest from people wanting to be involved we moved it to Glaxo.”
