PUPILS at a dale school started their celebrations for Fathers’ Day a little early this year.
The youngsters at Woodland Primary School invited their fathers, grandfathers and other members of their families into school for lunch to celebrate the event.
Headteacher Claire Carr said: “This is the third year we have had a lunch like this. The children love it”- it is different and fun.”
She added: “The lunch today is no different to the type of lunch the children usually have – it is really important that parents see exactly what their children are eating.”
Taylor Shaw, the catering provider at Woodland put on a two-course meal – mince and dumplings with jacket potatoes and vegetables followed by chocolate cake or a piece of fruit.
One proud father, Steve Edwards, whose two daughters, Rose and Sophie go to the school, said: ” This is just such a good idea.”
Mrs Carr was pleased with the turnout.
“We are a small school with 36 pupils and 15 fathers and grandfathers have turned up. That’s fantastic”
Another satisfied diner, John Jennings, whose granddaughter Ruby goes to the school said. “This is a really good idea and the food is superb. This is a great little school.”
Traditionally, fathers’ day is a celebration honouring fathers and celebrating fatherhood, paternal bonds and the influence of fathers in society.
It is believed to have its origins in 5th century Coptic Christian celebrations.
However old the celebration, pupils and their guests hope to make Woodland primary school’s lunch a tradition of their own.
