A COTHERSTONE group is about £6,000 short of its £100,000 target to turn a former Methodist chapel into a community run shop, cafe and heritage centre.
More than 100 people dropped in to a pop-up breakfast event on Sunday, where volunteers served up a mouth-watering mix of breakfast favourites including bacon sandwiches to give a flavour of what could be on offer if the project goes ahead.
The group, now a community benefit society, estimates the costs of setting up the cafe, including renovation of the chapel, will cost about £250,000.
They are looking to raise £100,000 through a share issue scheme and get the remainder of the money through match funding and grants. The pop-up event, the second the group has run, was deemed a great success with the total raised now standing at £93,760 from the share issue with an additional £1,500 donation.
Members of the group will be at Barnard Castle farmers’ market on Saturday (November 6) where they will be hoping to get more people to sign up before the share issue closes on November 8. To invest visit theoldchapel.info.
