Church asks for help to pay lights bill

STUNNING SETTING: The floodlit spire of Holy Trinity Church

PARISH councillors are being asked to help cover the cost of illuminating their village’s church.

The spire at Holy Trinity, in Startforth, is bathed in light on an evening.

In a letter to Startforth Parish Council, church official Colin Clarke asked for a donation towards the cost of the floodlights.

Cllr Chris Carr said the parish council used to give a donation a number of years ago.

“It was a standard amount given on an annual basis, but this is going back a few years.

“I think it was about £100, possibly less.”

Councillors were told there was no indication from Mr Clarke’s letter how much it costs to light up the spire.

They asked clerk Judith Mashiter to find out and also to look back through the parish council’s records to see how much was given in the past.
