A PACKED programme of events has been planned by volunteers organising this year’s  Middleton-in-Teesdale Carnival, with a number of events tipping a nod to the 80th anniversary of VE Day.

Colin Headlam, chairman of Middleton-in-Teesdale carnival committee, told residents at the parish annual meeting that planning was well underway for the popular event held on the first weekend in August. He said: “This year we have a few things going on and it all starts on Friday, April 11, with the announcement of the carnival royalty at the carnival disco.”

This year, organisers will crown either a carnival queen or king to ensure all year six youngsters get an equal opportunity to wear the crown.

Leading up to the popular carnival day on Saturday, August 2, there will be a shop window display competition, which this year has a theme of VE Day. The contest will run from Sunday, July 20.

After a long absence from the programme of events, a scarecrow trail is being run, again with a VE Day theme,

Mr Headlam added: “We have a walking event and a hill race as well as a car treasure hunt planned and children’s cycle races. On the main day we will have the procession with floats and on the carnival field we will have stalls and rides as well as a children’s entertainer and birds of prey display.

“On Sunday August 3 there will be the duck race, which was a good event last year.”
