A call has been made to remove small, heavy sandstone bollards in Cockfield because of their state and the damage they are causing.
Parish councillor Victoria Button raised the issue when the council met recently.
She said: “Lorries hit them often. Some of them are very wonky and need setting straight.
“They are a nuisance. They have damaged cars in the village. People are parking worse on the main road, so others can’t come out of their driveways and turn [without knocking them].”
Cllr Neville Singleton noted that the stones, put in by Durham County Council several years ago, “looked like tombstones”. He added that the stones would not be allowed now because bollards must be at a metre high.
Cllr Button said: “Put them somewhere useful so people can sit on them. They are just a horrible thing.”
Chairwoman Cllr Brenda Singleton said something would have to replace them otherwise people would drive their cars over the green, churning up the grass.
Members agreed to think of solutions and to discuss the issue when they next meet.
