CRAFTY folk of all ages found themselves in a sticky situation as they played their part in Durham’s forthcoming Lumiere Festival.
The four-day festival takes place from November 18-21 and includes a project called City of Light which has seen a number of lantern-making workshops held across the county, one of which was held at the TCR Hub, in Barnard Castle.
Those attending spent a day designing and gluing their eye-catching lanterns, which will form part of a display on College Green, next to Durham Cathedral, during Lumiere.
The workshop was organised by members of the Artichoke Project, the company which is producing the Lumiere Festival on behalf of Durham County Council.
Maeve McDonnell, an assistant producer with Artichoke, led the Barnard Castle workshop, which saw a variety of lanterns made depicting everything from the Taj Mahal to The Bowes Museum.
Ms McDonnell said the finished lanterns would be collected and stored until Lumiere is unveiled.
“We will do some touch-ups to make sure they are weather proof,” she said.
As well as producing lanterns, the City of Light project incorporates a soundscape of stories, poetry and music, some of which were recorded at The Hub, on the theme of Home, Light and Hope.
This year’s Lumiere Festival will feature 37 artworks and for the first time it will extend beyond Durham City.
One of the installations, Castle of Light, will see Spanish artist Javier Riera use projections to transform the lakeside facade of Raby Castle during the festival.
