Bowlers arrive in spite of dodgy report

WINNERS: Colin Watson and Dennis Richards with their trophies

DESPITE the dodgy weather forecast 32 players turned up to contest the Birkbeck Singles Trophy.

This is the maximum number that can be accommodated for a singles competition and they were randomly drawn into two groups with the winners from each meeting in the final.

Dennis Richards won through from group one with a maximum eight points and representing group two also with a maximum was Colin Watson.

The final played over five ends was a fairly tame affair with only one shot taken on every end. Colin just found the better line and weight taking the last three ends to win 4-1 and take the Trophy.

Men’s Vets

With the A team on a bye it was left to the B team to fly the flag for the club. Sitting on top of the league before the game at Bedale their 3-1 win keeps them at the top.

Top Rink consisted of Kevin Mannion, John Robinson and John Tallentire whose 18-11 win helped Barney to the long game 50-43.

Men’s Thursday Evening League

The A team entertained popular league leaders Darlington RA ‘A’ and in an attempt to make the B team feel better were beaten 5-0 with RA taking the long game 96-52.

The B team were away at Bishop Auckland and have found new ways of getting beat.

One rink dropped a five on the nineteenth end to lose by four shots and another dropped three on the last end to lose by one shot.

With Bishop taking the long game 68-61, Barney’s only point came from the rink of Bill Carter, Chris Johnson and Frank Ashmore who won 23-12.

Ladies

The Evening League match at a depleted Darlington North Park was reduced to 12 ends because of a late start as North Park searched for even the minimum six players.

Barnard Castle won two rinks even before their opponents score was reduced and took the long game easily to give three league points.

Thursday’s Afternoon League match was at home against Darlington Hundens who are always strong and were runners-up in the league last year. Excellent performances all round saw the home team take all four points.

Anne Hodgson, Mary Lambert and Beryl Embleton won 19-12 with Denise Dent, June Parkin and Rene Armstrong on 19-11. Barnard Castle took the long game 56-36.
