The Witham’s cashless plans postponed

The Witham’s controversial plan to become a cashless venue has been postponed following a wave of public criticism.

The popular Barnard Castle arts centre announced a new policy of being a cashless venue from September 1.

On social media, it said: “This follows advice from our insurers and helps improve safety for staff and volunteers by reducing the risks associated with handling cash.”

The announcement sparked a strong response, with one post on The Witham’s Facebook page saying: “As a registered charity and community venue that receives grants and public support, The Witham should be doing everything possible to remain accessible to the whole community.

“Going completely cashless risks excluding older residents, people without bank accounts or smartphones, and anyone who relies on cash to manage their spending.”

Management responded quickly to the criticism and halted the plan less than 24 hours later.

In a statement, centre director Amy Hughes said: “We have decided to pause our plans to move to card only payments for the foreseeable future.

“Cash will continue to be accepted alongside card payments while we explore other options.

“Thank you to everyone who took the time to share your views. We have listened carefully, and your feedback has played an important part in this decision.”

Ms Hughes added: “Our original proposal was never about excluding anyone,” she said. “As an independent charity, we have to balance accessibility with the practical realities of running a busy community venue.

“The safety and security of our staff must always come first. We have to think carefully about the risks associated with handling cash.

“Managing cash also places additional pressure on our small team at a time when The Witham is busier than ever and we continue to operate with limited resources.

“For now, we are pressing pause while we explore other ways to reduce these pressures without impacting accessibility.

“Thank you again for your support and for caring so passionately about The Witham. We will always listen to our community and continue working to find the best solutions for everyone.”
