A FUNDRAISING evening organised by officials at Barnard Castle FC raised a much-needed £500 boost for club funds ahead of hoped for promotion to the Wearside League’s top division.

As the season heads to its climax, Barney’s good form continues.

Saturday’s 4-0 win away at Wolviston kept the side in contention for a promotion spot.

Barney sit second to runaway leaders Willington, but more importantly well ahead of the International Soccer Academy and Durham City in third and fourth.

Should the club achieve promotion to the premier division, it will come at a cost.

While ground improvements have been made to bring the Tens Field pitch up to the standards required, Barney will need to find an extra £1,500 to cover the costs of match officials.

Currently, the club pays for the referee’s £30 fee and mileage.

If the club makes it to the premier division, it will have to cover the costs of two assistants as well.

A new kit to replace the ageing colours is likely to set the club back another £700, all of which has led to a renewed appeal for sponsors to come forward.

Manager John Close said: “The recent race night raised just over £500. We have one sponsor, CS Scaffolding, and they sponsor our tracksuits.

“We have five others who sponsor a board at the ground for about £150 a season.

“Everything else the club raises through the 100 club.”

Despite the club’s on-field success during the last couple of seasons, very few spectators turn up to matches.

There is no admission fee and food and refreshments are available.

Mr Close said: “We currently haven’t lost a game at home all season but it feels like we’re swimming against the tide when it comes to football in Barnard Castle.”

Barney are at home tomorrow (Saturday) when they take on Chester-le-Street United Reserves. Kick-off is 2.30pm.

Anyone interesting in supporting the club should contact Mr Close on 07999 339512, email [email protected] or via the club’s Facebook page.
