Barnard Castle blast into cup semi-final
Kerridge Cup quarter-final Normanby Hall v Barnard Castle
Barney secured their place in the semi-finals of the Kerridge Cup after thumping Normanby Hall by 184 runs.
Last season’s winners recovered from the loss of two early wickets to post a formidable 252-6 off their allotted 40 overs.
Opener Finn Usher was trapped LBW for one by Dhanish Hussain and James Quinn was bowled by Qamar Karim for six as Barney were reduced to 27-2.
Skipper Karl Carver then joined forces with James Clarkson and the pair staged an impressive recovery, putting on 140 for the third wicket before Clarkson was run out on 71 in the 31st over by Charlie Peirson.
Carver was then dismissed with the first ball of the following over after scoring 82 off 75 balls to leave the visitors on 176-4.
Barney made the most of the remaining overs, scoring 76 runs off 53 balls. Suminda Lakshan added 16 at a run-a-ball, Ed Barnes whacked 25 off 19 and Richard Borrowdale smashed an unbeaten 29 off 18 balls.
Chasing down 257 to win never looked likely as Barney’s bowlers claimed wickets at regular intervals.
Barnes removed both openers cheaply, trapping Matthew Rose (4) leg before wicket and bowling Talib Ramzan (4).
Usher (5-8) and Lakshan (3-6) put paid to the remaining batters as the hosts were skittled for just 68 in 14.1 overs.
Barney will play Saltburn in the semi-final at Vere Road on Sunday, July 19.

NYSD Premier Division Stokesley v Barnard Castle
Barney’s unbeaten start to the Premier Division continued with an impressive win at Stokesley.
Captain Karl Carver won the toss and elected to bat, a decision he had cause to question as the home side’s bowlers made early inroads.
Barney were 12 without loss when three wickets fell in the space of 12 balls. James Clarkson (4) was first to go when he was trapped LBW by Harry Peirson and he was followed by fellow opener Finn Usher (4), who was caught behind by keeper Jason Erskine off Evan Morris.
Then Carver, who has been in fine form with the bat, was trapped leg before by Peirson as Barney were reduced to 14-3.
It proved to be a tough day for batting as James Quinn and Max Martin top scored with 27 apiece as Barney nudged their way to 138 all out in the 40th over.
Stokesley found the going even tougher and only two of their batsmen managed to register double figures, opener Andrew Weighell (10) and Robert Foreman (11), as Barney’s bowlers ran amok.
Barnes (3-22) and Carver (3-14) took three apiece while Suminda Lakshan (2-3) secured victory with two wickets in three balls in what turned out to be the final over.
Next up for Barney in the Premier Division are Hartlepool, who visit Vere Road today (1pm).
