County Durham Spartans extend winning run
Staindrop-based County Durham Spartans kept up their winning streak in the British Baseball League with a double header triumph at Manchester Cavaliers at the weekend.
Despite a small travelling roster of 11 players, the team put in two brilliant performances.
Douglas Kishi, Ricky Scott and Liam Tweddle were fantastic on the mound and Oskar Studholme did exceptionally well catching back-to-back games in uncomfortable heat.
The real dominance though, came from the plate.
Piling up 37 runs across the two games, the Spartans’ bats were blazing.
The team made the most of every hit and on base opportunity, showing much improved confidence in their base running.
Stand out batters were Keiron Angel, with a perfect on-base percentage and eight RBIs (runs-batted-in) and left-handed center field Cammy Martin, whose ability to hit opposite-field doubles continues to confound the opposition.
The games finished 14-6 and 23-10 in Spartans’ favour, improving the season record to 7-1.
The next game is on June 28 when Leeds Locos visit Staindrop Academy.
New players are always welcome at training on Thursdays, 6.30-8.30pm.
