Vive la Teesdale – pupils saddle up for Tour de Staindrop

SPORTS EVENT: Deputy head teacher Janet Boyd with teaching assistant James Beauchamp and some of the students who completed the Tour de Staindrop

FIRST there was the Tour de France, then came the Tour de Yorkshire and now young cyclists have taken part in the inaugural Tour de Staindrop.

As part of a day celebrating all things Gallic, the event was organised by deputy head teacher at Staindrop Primary School Janet Boyd. The race saw all classes compete over a set of stages on the school field.

It had been postponed due to bad weather. However, pupils were able to board their cycles a week later in glorious sunshine to complete the endurance and speed circuit, which was

slightly less arduous than professional cyclists face in France. The stages were timed and the top three students from each class were presented with medals.

The winner of each class was awarded a yellow t-shirt similar to the jerseys given to the Tour De France winners. Those who didn’t wish to cycle waved on their friends with handheld French Tricolour flags. One of the pupils said it was “the best day of the year so far” .
