A VINTAGE Fair at St Mary’s Parish Hall, Barnard Castle, organised by Suzanne Thomas as part of the town’s 1940s weekend, raised more than £1,000 for the friends.

Twelve stalls, including two supporting the friends and the Butterwick Hospice ,were offered alongside refreshments served on vintage china.

Although entry was free, more than £200 was given in donations to boost the total.

Displays of flowers and wedding dresses arranged by St Mary’s Flower Guild and Weddings of Yesteryear attracted further visitors to the church and to shops and cafes in the town.

Among the floral displays was a “wedding cake” tribute to past chairman Marie Yarker and a wedding dress in the style of Princess Elizabeth’s from 1947, modelled by vintage singer Hattie Bee.
