Karl Carver sets sights on more success for Barnard Castle Cricket Club

Karl Carver has unfinished business with Barnard Castle Cricket Club.

The Barney skipper has been reflecting on a season that brought success in the Kerridge Cup but disappointment that the club failed to retain their Premier Division title.

However, the all-rounder believes there’s more to come from a team that won the top division in 2025 and led the table this summer by 30 points at one stage before falling at the final hurdle and allowing Richmond to claim the crown.

“I don’t want it to be a one [title] and done team,” he told the Mercury.

“It’s a case of what can we build with this team – the fulfilment still isn’t there.

“I’m really proud of the players’ efforts and we’ve pushed Richmond all the way,” he added.

“I think the factor that is really disappointing is we’ve led pretty much from ball one for about 80 per cent of the season.

“The first half of the season I was thinking there was a lot of buzz and excitement and maybe we went too much the other way.

“Last year we were in a position where we were chasing and everything was positive and we had to do whatever we could to win.

“This year I felt when we were on top we were a bit defensive, we were a bit tentative.

“It’s probably just a season of what should have been.

“We finished on more points than we did last year, but credit to Richmond, as soon as we slipped up they were in.

“We’ve probably let ourselves down, that’s why it’s disappointing.

“You look back on those moments across the season and assess what went wrong and what you can change.

“I think if anything, the batting side of things has been inconsistent probably since the end of June.

“Because we’ve got such a quality bowling line-up we’ve managed to dig ourselves out of a few situations.

“You look back at the scoring and the amount of times we’ve been 60 or 70 for four was disappointing.

“If you look at the averages in terms of returns for certain players across the team, our highest in the league is about 28 and that doesn’t win you titles.

“That just goes to show how close we could have been.

“If we could nail down the batting, we would be a really formidable side.”

It shows how far Barnard Castle have come that a season in which they have won a major trophy is seen as something of a let down.

Barney won the Kerridge Cup, the Macmillan Cup and the Premier Division last year and they had every intention of repeating the feat this year.

After missing out on two of those trophies, there’s a strong desire to win more silverware in 2027, with the league being the ultimate prize.

The make-up of next year’s squad has yet to be confirmed but Carver has hinted that he’ll be back at Barney for another shot at the title.

“From my point of view I’m hoping to keep the same balance of team,” he said.

“I think there’s still another year in this team, it’s got the capability to push for another title and that’s the ambition next year.

“I’ve still got things to achieve, I can’t see myself playing for any other club, this team can build a bit more of a legacy.

“I’ve played at Barney for six seasons and to have only won the league once with this side is disappointing.

“I’m not saying we should go out there and win it every year, I’m just saying I know the talent in that team, I’ll back every single one of those lads.

“We’ve just not played our best cricket across the season and in those big moments, when you need to stand up and be counted, we’ve all failed in that aspect.

“We all know what could have been.

“At the end of the day the most consistent team across the season wins the league.”
