Views sought on plan for mural at DIY and gardening shop in Barnard Castle

SHOP FRONT: People are being asked for their views on a proposed mural

OFFICIALS at a town DIY store have come up with a novel idea to attract more people through the door – a giant mural.

The giant piece of artwork is earmarked for the entrance to Maxwell’s, Barnard Castle, which faces the town centre public car park. The design is currently being considered and talks with planning officers at Durham County Council are planned to see what might be acceptable.

In the meantime, several artist’s impressions of how the rear entrance may look have been drawn up so reaction to the idea can be gauged.

Dave Greenfield, general manager of Maxwell’s, said: “It is just to try to bring some more people into the store.

“We know what’s going on out of town – this is a little bit of a fight back.”

At first, an advertising banner was mooted, but he said the initial idea for the mural began with “two people talking in the car park” .

“The wall could do with some work on it, so let’s make a statement and we were wondering what people would think of it,” added Mr Greenfield.

“Would it be a positive thing? If it was negative, it is something we might have to leave alone. I think it would look quite good if it was done tastefully. People’s perception will be interesting,” he said.

Mr Greenfield said feedback could be sent via the company’s website, maxwellsdiy.com or Facebook page.
