Upper dale outdoor activities show how kids ‘don’t need expensive toys’

WORK OF ART: Phoebe Race

THE theme of last week’s Wild Wednesday at Bowlees Visitors Centre was “a picture of nature” and encouraged youngsters to make art out of things they found lying around.

Mandy Oliver, from Bowlees Visitors Centre, said: “We are using our imaginations to see if we can find objects we can make a piece of art from. We are looking around and collecting anything from the wood that is not connected to anything else.”

While they were collecting materials, the children were asked to look and listen and come up with descriptive words that they would later put into a poem.

Middleton-in-Teesdale resident John Howard, who was there with his five-year-old grandson Thomas, said: “This is the first time we have been. It’s excellent. It shows the children the difference between the countryside and the town.”

Grandson Thomas, who lives in Cambridge, added: ” I would love to bring my friends from nursery – they would really like it. It’s really fun”

Parent Kim Race, from Staindrop, said: “This is amazing -“‚it’s on our doorstep and we have only just found out about it.

“It shows that children don’t need expensive toys and computer games to learn and have a good time. Kids just need space to explore.”
