WORDSMITHS: Nine-year-olds Letitia, Ben and Alfie set about writing the 500 Words competition entry

A DALE school’s entire student body is set to enter BBC Radio 2’s annual 500 words writing competition.

All nine of the pupils at Forest of Teesdale Primary School are not only taking part in the annual story writing competition but they are also holding their own internal competition, which is to be judged by Teesdale Mercury staff.

Assistant head teacher Claire Tunstall said writing is a big focus in the school and the decision to enter the competition was made by the children.

They will follow the rules of the competition which restricts the children’s stories to 500 words, but there is no particular theme that they need to follow.

Ms Tunstall added: “Thye can have their imagination run wherever it takes then. We are working with the younger ones so it more about their ideas and composition.”

Ahead of writing their stories, the children watched the live launch of the competition and listen to various celebrities read out previous winning entries.
