TWO years of investment and hard work has resulted in a rural school receiving an award for its “outstanding” outdoor play and learning (OPAL) facilities.

Butterknowle Primary School received a gold award during a special assembly last week from North East representative of OPAL Ingrid Wilkinson.

OPAL is community interest company that promotes outdoor play.

She said: “This certificate stands for a lot of hard work. I’ve been in a lot of schools across the country and very few have a gold award.

“It has taken 24 months and there has been a lot of hard work and investment from parents, staff and pupils. This school has outstanding play time, using the grounds all year round in creative ways.”

Headteacher Clare Carr said: “It is a real accolade for our school. We are very lucky to have the space we have and the facilities we have.”

She credited deputy headteacher Rachel Harmer for the work she did in improving the children’s playtime.
