Read all about it – Lions hit the market

GOOD CAUSE: Teesdale and District Lions Club members Paul Beere

THE sun shone when members of Teesdale and District Lions International were out in force for the latest of their fundraising activities – running a bookstall on Barnard Castle market.

The Lions, who organise regular fundraising activities across the dale, decided on the bookstall after receiving thousands of second-hand titles from another charity.

The market stall is provided free of charge by Barnard Castle Town Council for registered charities.

Teesdale and District Lions president Sharon Walker said they were kept busy all day with customers – and even had a rival bookseller pick up a few bargains. She added: “People are so good and the support has been fantastic. Most people know the money we raise goes back out into the community so they have been so generous.”

The second hand books, which ranged from thrillers to recipe books, had crowds flocking to find the perfect holiday read.

Mrs Walker said any of the books which were unsold at the end of the day would be shipped to a neighbouring Lions Club bookshop, on Houndgate Mews, in Darlington.
