MIDDLETON-in-Teesdale’s fish and chip shop has been declared one of the top 50 takeaways in the country.
And alongside the accolade, the shop also walked off with a string of gongs in the National Pie Awards.
The Fry Awards placed the chippy in its top 50 after a mystery diner tested the quality of the fish and chips as well as staff presentation, front of house hygiene and customer service.
Among the honours the shop won for its pies was a silver for its steak and potato pie and bronze awards for its steak and kidney pie with red wine gravy, minted Wensleydale lamb and potato pie and its chicken curry pie.
Lydia Sunter, from Middleton-in-Teesdale Fish and Chip Shop, said: “Both awards mean a tremendous amount to us as a small family run business.
“It’s testament to what we do serving the best fish, chips and homemade pies.
“We couldn’t be prouder of the excellent food we produce, served by our fabulous team.”
She thanked the shop’s customers and staff for their support during “these trying times” .
Reece Head, competition organiser for the Fry Awards, said: “Announcing our award winners couldn’t come at a better time. The industry is going through a stage of uncertainty with coronavirus impacting the lives and incomes of thousands of shops and owners. This is just the news we need to lift the industry so that those that are still trading can tell their customers immediately, while those that are closed have something exciting to shout about when their doors open again. Our award winners are all at the top of their game and are moving with the times, embracing technology such as contactless payments, online ordering, and click and collect and delivery while still ensuring the food they are serving is top quality and the customer service is second to none.”
