Making the cut for cancer hair appeal

Kimberley Raper and Leah Bettany admire their stylist's handy work

TWO Teesdale women have had their hair cut for the first time in years to support a young people’s charity.

Ingleton Primary School teacher Kimberley Raper and Leah Bettany, whose daughter Isabelle goes to the school, agreed to donate their hair to the Little Princess Trust.

The trust provides real hair wigs free of charge to children and young adults that have lost their own hair through cancer treatment and other illnesses.

A slightly nervous Mrs Bettany said: “I am donating my hair, and whatever funds raised, because little ginger girls needs wigs too.”

She added: “I have been married for 15 years and my husband has never seen me with short hair.”

In front of a packed morning assembly in the school hall, the pair were cheered on by the pupils as they braved the scissors. On hand to do the cutting were two hairdressers – Becky Lucas, from Angel Hair in Gainford, and Gemma Ashton, from Heart Hairdressers in St Helen Auckland. Mrs Raper said she had talked about having her hair cut for charity many times with her hairdresser Mrs Lucas.

“It just felt the time was right and it is important for the children to see there is a whole world outside our sheltered community.”

The duo have so far raised about £700 and with more fundraising taking place in school this week they hope to make it even more. The schoolchildren are selling ice cream, cakes, cookies, milkshakes and pancakes and will be donating their proceeds to the trust.
