Like clockwork, from Big Ben to Bowes’ bird

WORK BEGINS: Cumbria Clock Company experts starts to dissassemble the swan for the major restoration and conservation project. Below

Join the Friends of The Bowes Museum on November 27 for an inspiring morning with Keith and Callum Scobie-Youngs, from the Cumbria Clock Company.

They are leading the team carrying out the major restoration project of the Silver Swan which will see the swan operational again on a regular basis before the end of the year.

This horological challenge has been embraced by Keith Scobie-Youngs, a Fellow of the British Horological Institute. He has worked on many iconic timepieces such as the St James’ Palace Clock and the great clock of Westminster, more commonly known as Big Ben.

Keith and Callum will share some insights and secrets of their clockwork mastery and what working on the swan entails. There will be a chance to ask them questions.

The ambitious project totals a little short of £200,000. A lottery grant has been secured, but more funds are needed and proceeds from this talk will go to supporting the crowdfunding appeal to raise £18,000.

The Friends, a separate charity from the museum, are doing what they can to support the museum and have organised this event which is 11am to noon. It is open to everyone.

Tickets cost £14 (£12 for Friends) and include welcome refreshments at 10.30am.

A Friends spokesperson said: “Ticket sales will be channelled into this historic restoration effort. Please don’t miss this chance to make a difference. Together, we can ensure the Silver Swan’s timeless beauty and grace will be around to delight future generations.”

Tickets can be purchased by ringing reception on 01833 690606 or via the website thebowesmuseum.org.uk.
