A NEW craze of donning a dress to put the bins out is sweeping the streets of Barnard Castle, and it is creating a little merriment during the coronavirus lockdown as well as raising a few pounds for NHS charities.
Ian Holliday, who lives in Marwood Drive, in Barnard Castle, has been providing a light relief for his neighbours each Wednesday by donning his wife’s dresses to put their wheelie bin out for collection.
The Ballgowns Bins Out Challenge was started by television personality Amanda Holden, who dressed up in an evening gown to put her bin out.
Mr Holliday, a production manager at GSK, has now set the challenge to ten of his friends.
He said: “The first week I just wore a majorette outfit as a bit of fun and my wife Lindsay posted the picture on her social media page.
“Last week I decided to put one of her dresses on and suggested to ten of my friends they should do the same. For every one that does it and posts a picture I’m going to donate £2 to the BC Locked-down and Loaded NHS charities fundraiser.
“Several have already posted photographs and tagged ten more people so hopefully we’ll be raising a few pounds, but it’s just a bit of fun really. I’ve actually had people posting photographs that weren’t tagged and I’ve said they should carry on and tag more people.
“But there is no pressure if people don’t want to join in that’s fine – it’s all just to keep our spirits up.”
