ALMOST 100 older people from Evenwood enjoyed a free festive lunch, thanks to the efforts of a kind-hearted caterer.
It has been about a decade since Kimberley Clark presented her first Christmas feast at the workingmen’s club.
This year people enjoyed entertainment from singer Jemma Highfield while tucking into roast pork and stuffing, pigs in blankets, lamb casserole, sausages, cottage pie and all the trimmings, as well as desserts and a cheeseboard.
Ms Clark said meals were also delivered to people who were unable to make it to the club on the day.
Food preparation began the night before.
Ms Clark said: “Vegetables were prepared yesterday. Then we started in the early hours this morning, and with a cheeky glass of wine in between just to keep going.”
She thanked family and friends who had helped out and were on hand to dish up the treat.
The caterer also extended gratitude to main sponsors Graham’s Logs along with Sainsbury’s at Darlington and Tesco and Morrisons at Bishop Auckland.
Of the support she had received, she said: “There has been an absolutely wonderful community spirit, it is humbling to be fair.”
Special thanks went to Charlotte Sanderson of The Queen’s Bow who had covered the tables and chairs and provided decorations free of charge.
