Careers fair offers students a glimpse into the future

COOKING UP A CAREER: Rupert Philbrick explained how catering could be a career option - with students eager to tuck into what he had prepared

YOUNGSTERS at a dale secondary school got a glimpse of what the future might hold when they attended a careers fair.
The event was organised at The Hub, Barnard Castle, specifically for students at nearby Teesdale School.
Some 25 exhibitors highlighted what could be on offer once the teenagers had completed their exams, either GCSEs or A level.
A number of further and higher education establishments were represented at the event, including Bishop Auckland College, Newcastle University, East Durham and Houghall College and Queen Elizabeth Sixth Form College, Darlington.
Employers included GSK, Technimark, based at Middleton-in-Teesdale, and The Bowes Museum.
Staff from The Hub also showcased a variety of careers, including catering, outdoor activities and music.
Uniformed services, including the police and fire, were also present.
Lisa Johnstone, co-organiser, said all youngsters from Teesdale School, from year seven through to sixth formers, attended the fair.
She said it was the first careers fair since 2019 as Covid had put paid to any chance of staging them since then. “The idea is to give kids a chance to see what’s out there post-16 and post-18,” she added.
