Brexit boxes’ to grow your own veg

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: Martin Bacon with son

A CONSERVATION group is launching a range of “Brexit veg boxes” to help people grow their own produce amid uncertainty over Britain leaving the EU.

Teesdale Community Volunteers (TCV), based in Startforth, is making raised beds for people to buy.

Martin Bacon, of TCV, says the Brexit veg boxes have been created tongue-in-cheek but have a serious message – to promote the benefits of homegrown produce.

He said: “At TCV we always promoteself reliance and with the current uncertainty over Brexit and food supply to the UK, why not grow your own? With our newly designed Brexit veg box, you are guaranteed to have a fresh crop of veggies through these hard uncertain times.”

The boxes, which measure 2.4m by 1.2m, will come with three dumpy bags of “politically neutral compost” , added Mr Bacon, who stressed he is staying firmly out of the debate for and against Brexit. Boxes can be built to any size.

“Beds cost £75 or 85 euros and we also accept bitcoin and backrubs,” joked Mr Bacon.

The eco-group had stopped making raised beds several years ago but were prompted into resuming sales after a letter from customer Anna

Da Costa who asked for one and suggested further requests were inevitable due to Brexit.

TCV will also be growing tomatoes and cucumber plants later this year.

“People will be able to buy them at cost – it’s just about getting people into it,” he added.

Call TCV on 01833 690022 for more details.

The Teesdale Mercury is happy to clarify that TCV, also known as Rotters, does not have a deadline for people joining its green waste collection scheme – unlike schemes operated elsewhere in the county.
