KEEP it local – that’s the message from a trio of event organisers who are putting on a range of activities in and around Barnard Castle to coincide with celebrations for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in June.
Barnard Castle Farmers’ Market, the town’s Meet Committee and The Truck Show are all staging events over the jubilee weekend and are looking to encourage residents from the town and surrounding area to stay local.
Martyn Maughan, chairman of Barnard Castle Meet, said: “We’ve all been working together behind the scenes to support each other.”
Already the Meet has opted to alter the date of its traditional procession to Friday, June 3, to avoid clashing with the farmers’ market on its usual first Saturday of the month – June 4.
He added: “It’s going to be a busy weekend with lots going on, more reasons to stay local and enjoy the fun.”
Carol Parker, manager of the farmers’ market, added: “I think there will be a really good range of activities around. Everything is complementing the other that weekend and there is something for everybody.”
The procession kicks off the Meet activities on Friday, June 3, at 1pm after which there will be live music on the Demesnes.
A car boot sale, fun pet show and more live music has also been organised for the following day.
In the first of two visits to Teesdale this year, the Truck Show, held at Streatlam Farm, near Barnard Castle, will be open to the public from Friday through until Sunday.
Organiser Stephen Hall said: “It’s the first time that we have run two in one year, but since we took over in 2019 it is getting bigger.
“We’re looking at around 200 trucks and vans but we’re hoping to get a lot of tractors as well.
“We’ve got a number of trucks that have been airbrushed and some of them are going to go in the parade as well.
“We’re not in competition with each other and it’s about providing a really good day out for everyone.”
