A PROJECT to encourage more young women to get outdoors and experience the freedom of the fells kicks off on Friday, August 18, with the first of four hikes.
The Happy Soul Hikes project, organised by the TCR Hub, in Barnard Castle, and supported by the Sported x Vodafone fund, will stage the hikes between August and October.
They are aimed at women aged between 14 and 20 and led by qualified mountain leaders Rachel Tweddle and Rosie Watson.
Ms Tweddle, chief executive at the TCR Hub, said: “As female mountain leaders we have both often found ourselves in a male dominated area of work.
“We both receive comments about looking after ourselves on the mountain that aren’t aimed at our male partners. We also find that there is an image of mountain leaders as being macho, alpha men and this can put off females who wish to explore the outdoors. We want to break down this perception.”
The walks will be relaxed, fun and tailored to the experiences and wishes of the group.
Ms Tweddle added: “We are looking for young women who weren’t the first in line for Duke of Edinburgh, shied away from PE or don’t have the first idea about walking kit.
“Being in the outdoors is incredibly good for our mental and physical health and we promise a day in the mountains will make you feel fantastic.”
The inaugural walk on Friday, August 18, will be an introduction to the fells. Transport will be provided and is fully funded.
Ms Tweddle said: “The first walk is most likely to be around the Ullswater area as it is fairly accessible to us.
“We will have a walk, exploring the fell as we go and look at basic navigation, finishing with a cuppa and cake in one of the local cafes.”
