Family serves up return of popular Barney cafe

FAMILY AFFAIR: From left

FOUR generations of a family were on hand to help serve up snacks and drinks to customers as The Stables Cafe reopened in its new venue in Barnard Castle.
The business, which was started 30 years ago and is run by Sheena and Stephen Aldred and their daughter Nicola Stephenson, had to close its doors at the Hayloft when they were unable to access coronavirus
grants.
During lockdown they continued to operate a takeaway roast dinner service to customers, many of whom were elderly and shielding at home. They ran the service for a while from the kitchen of The Hub. Determined to continue with the cafe, the family secured new premises in Horsemarket and have been renovating the property into a bright and welcoming space.
On Saturday, they were back in business with a stream of customers enjoying cold snacks and drinks.
Mrs Aldred said: “It’s great to be back but we won’t be open properly until Tuesday, August 18, with our full menu.
“It’s been a lot of hard work, but we’re just so delighted and hope to see all our regular customers soon.”
