BIG plans are afoot for Barnard Castle’s annual Christmas switch-on event next month.

The town’s volunteer Christmas lights committee, working alongside the town council, English Heritage, The Witham, the TCR Hub and The Clique, want to make the town’s festive switch-on event on Friday, December 1, extra special.

As well as Andrew Nicholson comparing the two-hour event, when there will be a Santa’s Grotto and an inflatable snow globe. There will also be a lantern parade from The Witham to the Castle.

School children from Montalbo, Green Lane, St Mary’s RC, Teesdale and Barnard Castle School will be taking part in the lantern parade, which this year has a theme of the night sky.

To encourage more families to get involved, the TCR Hub has organised free community workshops with local artists so more people can make their own lantern, and also then take part in the procession.

There are four, two-hour workshops organised on Wednesday, November 8, from 4pm until 6pm, Wednesday, November 15, from 4pm until 6pm, Saturday, November 18, 10am until noon, and Saturday, November 25, 10am until noon.

Local artists Anneliese Baxter, Gemma McColl, Holly Scott and Suzanne Williams will be on hand at the workshops to help everyone make their own night sky inspired lantern for the parade.

The workshops are free to attend, but booking is required. Visit www.ticketsource.co.uk/tcr-hub/e-ldzkqz
