SOLO SHOW: Artist Jill Campbell's solo exhibition Fell Walks features artwork inspired during lockdown walks

ABSTRACT works of art depicting Cockfield’s historic fell will go on show next month as part of a solo exhibition by local artist Jill Campbell.
Fell Walks, a month-long exhibition at the Gallagher and Turner gallery in Newcastle, opens on September 10.
It will feature works Ms Campbell, a member of Teesdale Art Network, has created during the past 18 months, inspired by her lockdown walks over the fell.
While out walking, Ms Campbell often sketches and takes photographs, turning these small studies or pictures into abstract expressionist paintings back at her studio.
Her expressive paintings are built up gradually through layers of drawing and paint to create a balance, inspired by Cockfield fell, that she says has a “strange, other-worldly” quality.
Coming to painting later in life following a career in law, Ms Campbell graduated from Sunderland University with a first-class degree in fine art seven years ago.
Discovering the Teesdale landscape when she moved to the area 17 years ago prompted her to make “a real” go of her painting.
Her work has been exhibited throughout the UK, including at The Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists Prize Exhibition, the Ferens Open and the New Light Art Prize Exhibition.
Fell Walks opens at Gallagher and Turner gallery on St Mary’s Place, Newcastle, on Tuesday September 10, and runs until October 9.
