Historic venue ‘is like exhibiting in a home’

STUNNING SETTING: Artist Jill Campbell is showing her work at Kiplin Hall

A NOTED dale artist is currently showing her work as part of a group exhibition at 400-year-old stately home.

Jill Campbell, from Lynesack, is taking part in No Borders, which showcases the work of artists from across the country at Kiplin Hall, North Yorkshire.

It comes after the artist exhibited in the Royal Academy summer exhibition in London.

Ms Campbell’s work is largely inspired by Cockfield Fell, where she walks most mornings.

Kiplin Hall provided a different venue to show her work.

She said: “I am so used to seeing my work in a white box. It’s wonderful to see it in a different context.

“It seems somehow warmer and more approachable against the deep red of the walls in the house. It’s more like seeing your work hanging in a home than a gallery, perhaps the way the owners of the house might have wanted to display it themselves in the past.”

Although unusual today, hanging contemporary art in historic houses is a very traditional concept.

Curator Sarah Mayhew Craddock said: “As is evident from the collection that surrounds the visitor, many of the past inhabitants of Kiplin Hall have been keen art lovers and collectors of work by contemporary artists of their various periods. This exhibition continues the Kiplin tradition of combining the work of creatives from various centuries through to the present day.”

No Borders runs until Wednesday, October 30. Entry is included in normal admission.
