Activities to keep dale communities thriving

SUPER CERAMICS: Artist Lindsey Starborn shows how it's done

FROM ceramics to cinema, a year-long programme of activities has been offering curious folk the chance to pick up a new skill in relaxed surroundings.
The series of eight-week workshops held at the TCR Hub, in Barnard Castle, form part of a project called Thriving Communities, organised in collaboration with arts charity Northern Heartlands.
Launched earlier this year, outdoor enthusiasts were taught how to canoe, while a pottery class has just concluded which saw a group of absolute beginners learn the basics and progress to produce some kiln fired objects, from cups and bowls to artistic pieces.
A Lindy Hop dance workshop continues until November 18, with a film-making project, led by Barnard Castle-based Howell Films, due to begin on November 25, running into the new year.
The pottery sessions were led by dale ceramics artist Lindsey Starborn – who had to contend with the effects of a broken arm while overseeing the project.
Meanwhile, Budding Spielbergs will be given a grounding in all aspects of movie-making, from developing an idea and characters to filming, either on their phones or using Howell Films’ kit.
They will then be given a grounding in post-production, including editing and finishing their films.
The film workshops will conclude with a “premiere” and after-show celebration for family and friends.
Jonny Elliott, outdoor pursuits manager at The Hub said the free sessions would be held weekly on a Thursday afternoon and open to anyone aged 18 and older, with refreshments available.
Anyone interested in signing up for the film-making workshops should contact Mr Elliott by email – jonny.tcrhub@gmail. com.
