Toby sails in to claim Optimist title at regional junior championships

Max Yeowart showed determination in his Optimist with a 15th place in the championship fleet of 21.

THE mixed weather of the weekend of September 28 and 29 offered a challenge for the Teesdale Sailing and Watersports Club juniors who attended the RYA Regional Junior Championships at Derwent Reservoir.

The competition saw the best young sailors from an area from Liverpool to Hull to Scotland compete in a series of races across the weekend.

Strong winds prevented the regatta fleet from competing on the Saturday, but a drop in the wind on the Sunday allowed everyone to get on the water.

Our sailors met the challenge superbly, with all performing admirably.

Finn Goodman fought the conditions well earning a good 22nd in the Topper class in a strong fleet of 35.

Finn also won an award for always smiling over the weekend.

Max Yeowart showed determination in his Optimist with a 15th place in the championship fleet of 21.

Oliver Waggett was sailing a Tera and came fifth in a fleet of seven, an excellent result given this was Oliver’s first time sailing that class of boat.

Toby Waggett won the Optimist regatta competition with an excellent performance, and received an additional award for having the best attitude in the regatta fleet.

Throughout the weekend Toby’s positive attitude and concentration did not falter.

Teesdale juniors have been first in the RYA championships two years in a row, with Max Yeowart winning in 2018 and now Toby in 2019.
