Record-breaking day for Etherley

Durham & North East Cricket League Division Two Evenwood v Horden

Evenwood’s overseas player Risira Lakvin Weerasuriya is bang in form at the moment.

He scored 106 off 112 balls in an impressive 108-run victory over Horden, while George Spark hit 57
not out off just 24 balls including five fours and four sixes.

Luke Bannister (30) and Daniel Wilkinson (33) also made important contributions as Evenwood posted 277-5 off 45 overs.


Horden were then skittled for 169 with Adam Irving taking 2-17 off nine overs, Rhys Pears 3-34 and Thomas Teesdale 2-43.

Evenwood 277-45 (45 overs) bt Horden 169 all out (37.5 overs) by 108 runs

Division Six Belmont II v Evenwood II

Evenwood Seconds bowled out Belmont Seconds for just 87, with 56 of those runs coming from captain Darren Bradley.


The wicket takers were Rory Francis 4-23, Jamie Lamb 3-8 and Joseph Brunton 3-23. Evenwood required just 69 balls to knock off the runs with Joseph Brunton (55) scoring a half century and Rory Francis adding 26 not out.

Belmont Seconds 87 all out (29.4 overs) lost to Evenwood Seconds 89-1 (11.3 overs) by 9 wickets

Darlington & District Cricket League Division A Aldbrough St John v Barton

Aldbrough opener Michael Fleming scored 81 against Barton while the rest of his team-mates failed to make double figures as the hosts were bowled out for 135.

Barton knocked the required runs off inside 22 overs with Mayur Pareek scoring 67 not out.

Aldbrough 135 all out (33.2 overs) lost to Barton 139-3 (21.5 overs) by 6 wickets

Barningham v Haughton

Barningham were bowled out for 129 by title-chasing Haughton, with Sam Metcalf top scoring with 55.

Barningham’s bowlers made life hard for the visitors, who lost eight wickets chasing down a relatively low total.

Captain and opener Dan Naisbitt led by example, scoring an unbeaten 63 as wickets fell around him.

Charles Metcalfe finished with 4-36 while Sam Metcalf took 2-6 but the visitors won by two wickets.

Barningham 129 all out (33.3 overs) lost to Haughton 130-8 (30 overs) by 2 wickets

Cliffe v Witton-le-Wear

Cliffe openers Tom Barwick (103) and Tim Torrance (114) put on 205 for the first wicket in a high scoring game against Witton-le-Wear.

The hosts eventually scored 325-5, which proved more than enough for victory as Witton were bowled out for 266.

Raby Castle v Middleton St George

Joe Dent (58) and Gareth Walton (35) got leaders Raby off to a good start against Middleton St George.

The home side reached 171-7 which wasn’t quite enough as Middleton knocked off the target 13 balls to spare. Muhammad Parvez scored 59 and James Forster took 4-17.

Division B Catterick Village v Cliffe II

In a dramatic run-chase, Cliffe Seconds fell short of victory by just two runs. Catterick had scored 248-8 (L Ryan 78) and despite 93 not out from skipper Ben Wilson and 56 from Andy Brown, Cliffe finished their 40 overs on 247-6.

Etherley v Northallerton IV

Etherley scored a Darlington & District League record total of 491-5 against Northallerton Fourths.

No less than three players scored centuries on a record-breaking day – skipper Laan Sugarathan (190), Tinu Geetha (170) and Jinoy Lona (139) – which has never been achieved before in the league.

Northallerton were bowled out for just 50 with Joshlin James taking 4-8, which meant leaders Etherley won by an incredible 441 runs.

Club vice-captain Alan Breeze said: “The team takes its proud place in the league’s hall of fame for the team achieving the largest winning margin of 441 runs, destroying the previous best by Barningham of 287 runs.

“This season has seen Etherley Cricket Club take advantage of the large Keralan contingent of players from India that we have welcomed to the club.

“This has enabled the club to field a second team for the first time in several decades and reignite ambitions to return Etherley CC to the former glory days when they played a significant part in the Durham County League, winning the league title in 1972,” said Breeze.

“The club itself is grateful for the support of Escomb Junior Football Club who train on the cricket outfield and the adjacent junior 11-a-side pitch, and for the voluntary staff headed by Dave Coglan who spend untold hours preparing the square and outfield for play.”

Etherley 491-5 (40 overs) bt Northallerton Fourths 50 all out (23 overs)

Middleton-in-Teesdale v Raby Castle II

From 16-1 and 28-2, Middleton managed to recover and post a huge score against Raby Seconds thanks to a 280-run third wicket stand.

Skipper John Lucas scored 120 off 101 balls while Oliver Welsby was unbeaten on 173 from 104 balls in a knock that included 21 fours and seven sixes in a final score of 355-3.

Welsby then took 3-17 and Robert Whiting claimed 3-20 as Raby were bowled out for 155.

Division C Barton II v Etherley II

Etherley Seconds opener Jjoy Joseph scored 116 not out against Barton Seconds. Shinto Paul the took 4-36 as the hosts were bowled out for 211.
