Golden haul for Teesdale swimmers
The Special Olympics GB Teesdale Branch swimming team continued its impressive run of success with 17 podium places at the Scarborough Gala on Sunday, September 20.
The six swimmers – Declan Haughney, Adam Rowntree, Jonathon Taylour, Erica Dixon, Lucy Bridson and Ellie Cleasby – produced a series of strong performances, collecting eight gold, six silver and three bronze medals, as well as two fourth-place finishes.
The latest results follow the team’s successful appearances at the Special Olympics GB National Games in Birmingham in August and a regional competition in Blackpool in September.
Team spokesperson Peter Dixon said: “An early start and the journey to the Yorkshire coast didn’t deter the team.
“Everyone performed with great spirit and achieved magnificent results.
“They did Teesdale proud.
“It was fantastic to see how much the Scarborough Gala has grown, with this being only the fourth event they have hosted.
“A lovely pool, a friendly atmosphere and extremely efficient organisation made it a great experience for everyone.”
Adding to the occasion was special guest Aaron Gilson from Scarborough, who has represented Great Britain at the European Aquatic Championships.
Aaron helped present medals throughout the day.
The team are now looking forward to the Leeds Swimming Gala on Sunday, October 25.
The Teesdale branch is keen to hear from anyone interested in getting involved, whether as an athlete, volunteer or supporter.
