Dipton raiders take open tournament cup

WELL DONE: The Dipton team

Barnard Castle Bowls Club

Annual Open Tournament

This is an all day event where teams of three play five games of five ends with a maximum 45 points available.

There were 30 teams entered but unfortunately three failed to appear which meant byes were created and averages came into play. It is a situation we didn’t need, however there were no complaints and the club had a very successful day.

There was some first class bowling throughout the day with the team from Dipton winning with 37.5 points and one of Barney’s coming second. A lot of hard work goes into the day so a big thank you to all who helped.

Men’s Vets League

It was a double header with the A team away at Darlington South Park A and the B team at home playing their B team.

The A team are having a bit of a struggle and following this week’s 3-1 defeat sit third from bottom with just a 2.5 point cushion from the relegation zone after South Park took the long game 48-70.

One bright spot was the 27-14 win from the rink of Michael Littlefair, Alan Wearmouth and Denis Richards.

On the home green, the B team went into the match with just one point separating them from their opponents in first and second place in the league. Bill Carter, Peter Rimmington and John Robinson won 26-13 but that wasn’t enough to save the game as the other two rinks lost and South Park won the long game 56-58 and the game 3-1.

This leaves Barney one point behind South Park and Richmond who are tied at the top of the league. There are two games left but Richmond have a game in hand so anything could happen.

Men’s Darlington and

District League

The team were away at Shildon BR and despite some close games only managed one point from the rink of Peter Rimmington, Stephen Wall and Neil Watters who won 19-17.

Barney lost one of the other rinks by one shot having been 19-13 up they managed to lose 19-20, however Denis took the defeat gracefully.

The other two rinks both lost by four shots ensuring Shildon won the long game 70-77. JT

Ladies bowls

There were two Afternoon League games to catch up on postponed matches. At home to Darlington Hundens, new member Kathy Palmer played well in her first league match. Her rink was unlucky to lose on the last two ends after leading from the start. Hundens took the long game 45-40.66 with the home team’s only point coming from Laura Angel and June Parkin’s double act.

At Darlington South Park, the rink of Rene Armstrong, Denise Dent and Debbie Bailey played consistently well to win 19-13. The long game was a draw at 41-41 so Barnard Castle came away with 1.5 league points to South Park’s 2.5. JP
