Barnard Castle extends unbeaten run

NYSD
Premier Division
Darlington RA v Barnard Castle

Barney put in another highly efficient performance against Darlington RA to maintain their unbeaten start to the 2026 Premier Division season.

The home side won the toss and elected to bat. It looked a wise decision as openers Paul Freary and Mathew Pillans took their partnership beyond 50.

But once Kark Carver caught Pillans (33) off his own bowling, Barney soon worked their way through the rest of the batting line-up.

Captain Freary top scored with 74 but none of the remaining batsmen reached double figures as RA slumped from 58 not out to 134 all out, losing all ten wickets for 76 runs.

Sri Lanka all-rounder Suminda Lakshan finished with 4-31, Tom Merryweather claimed 3-27 and Carver (2-12) bowled a miserly 11 overs that saw him concede just 12 runs.

Barney openers James Clarkson (13) and Finn Usher (29) fell in the ninth and tenth overs respectively as the visitors slumped to 46-2, but James Quinn (35no) and Carver (51no) saw their side home with an unbeaten 89-run third-wicket partnership.

Barney are next in action tomorrow (Saturday, 1pm) when they take on Middlesbrough at Acklam Park.

Kerridge Cup, round two
Stockton v Barnard Castle

Barnard Castle go marching on in the defence of their Kerridge Cup crown.

In the dazzling Whit Monday sunshine, opener James Clarkson lit up their second round tie at Stockton with a sizzling 114 scored off 112 deliveries.

While Clarkson set about the bowlers, Barney lost Finn Usher (4) and James Quinn (4) and slumped to 17-2, before Karl Carver walked out to bat.

The skipper and Clarkson joined forces to put on 157 for the third wicket before the captain was trapped lbw by Adam Hickey (3-41) for 71.

Barney eventually reached 272-6 off their 40 overs and, in reply, Stockton struggled to get going, losing wickets at regular intervals, starting with opener Lewis Beaumont, who was bowled for a two-ball duck by Tom Merryweather.

Versatile Barney FC skipper Merryweather also showed his agility in the field, taking two catches, both off the bowling of Finn Usher, who finished with 4-15.

Stockton’s hopes seemed to rest on the shoulders of Hickey who dug in for 44 before he was trapped leg before by Suminda Lakshan (2-38).

Batting at six, captain James Ward (34) was the only other batter to hang around but once he was caught by Clarkson off Usher it was pretty much over as a contest and Barney wrapped up a convincing 152-run win in 23 overs.

Barney’s reward is a quarter-final tie at Normanby Hall on Sunday, June 14 (1.30pm).
