Community sports facility to re-open after £70,000 revamp

ALMOST THERE: Transformation of Hamsterley tennis courts into a multi-use sports area is nearly complete TM pic

FOUR years after launching a campaign to revamp a little-used tennis court into a multi-use sporting facility for all ages, a Teesdale community sports association has organised an official opening.

Hamsterley Community Sports Association was formed in 2019 to help co-ordinate a major fundraising drive to overhaul the village tennis courts into a more user-friendly area.

The group raised more than £70,000 to carry out the refurbishing work, which has included landscaping the area surrounding the MUGA with trees, relaying Tarmac and new fencing.

A spokesperson for the group said: “At present the surface is being laid and once the surface has cured, which takes approximately two to three weeks, lines will be applied ready for use.”

The revamped sports area, which will be suitable for all kinds of sporting activities including tennis, five-a-side football, basketball, netball, rounders and hockey, will be officially opened on Saturday, October 28, at 3pm, when a celebrity sports person will cut the ribbon.

Members of the Hamsterley Community Sport Association are inviting everyone along to the opening when there will be drinks and nibbles to celebrate as well as games for children and the opportunity to try out the refurbished area.
